Lake trout, whitefish, pike, carp, tench, blue pickerel, char & Co: Lake Weissensee in Carinthia is a sheer paradise for hobby fishermen. Fishing season: May 10 until October 20. Fjord-like Lake Weissensee spans a surface of 6.5 km² and is largely undeveloped. This means that there are no fishing area restrictions and one fishing pass is valid for the entire lake. The lake boasts 22 species of fish – reaching from whitefish and lake trout to pike and carp – and varying depths, from 5 m to 99 m, making all variations of fishing possible. Every hotel or pension has its own free-of-charge access to the lake, in most cases also with their own fishing boats. Many hotels and pensions offer a special service for hobby fishermen. This not only includes a fishing boat, but also a special early-riser breakfast, facilities for freezing your catch and pub nights for hobby fishermen. The traditional highlight for all hobby fishermen is the international competition over the “Golden Trout of Lake Weissensee”, which has been taking place in May each year for more than 35 years. A hit list of the heaviest catches is kept throughout the season, and the “Hegefischen” to control pike and bass stocks takes place every autumn. |
