The Karnische Ungetüm is the alpine challenge for experienced trail runners seeking the original and demanding. The approximately 50 kilometers long route leads through the impressive mountain world of the Karnische Alps – over narrow trails, rocky passages, steep ascents, and exposed ridges with breathtaking views.

The race is considered technically very demanding: steep trails, stony crossings, alpine terrain, and challenging descents require surefootedness, concentration, and experience in the mountains. Therefore, in the trail running scene, the Karnisches Ungetüm is repeatedly referred to by runners as one of the toughest trail races in Austria – not only because of the distance but especially due to the technical demands and altitude gain.

This route is aimed at very well-trained athletes with exceptional endurance and mental strength.
Those who start here consciously seek the sporting experience at the limits of wild, original nature.

Several aid stations along the route provide necessary supplies; however, the Karnisches Ungetüm remains a race with true mountain character, requiring respect and careful preparation.

At the finish line in Kötschach-Mauthen, emotional finishing moments, enthusiastic spectators – and the traditional finish beer await as a well-deserved reward after an extraordinary trail day.
